Braun Electric Toothbrush
The Oral B Pro 7000

The Oral B Pro 7000 is the top-of-the-range Braun electric toothbrush, a conventional oscillating electric toothbrush from Braun/Oral B, rather than a sonic toothbrush. It comes with the Smart Guide, a remote wireless device that displays a variety of information.

This is the ultimate conventional electric brush from Oral B, with a price tag to match! It's a popular choice with many dentists.

Let's take a look at some of the features.

The Oral B Pro 7000 is a full-sized electric toothbrush with a rechargeable battery in the handle. Because this is a powerful brush with a long battery life between charges, it needs a big battery! Oral B claims that the battery life is up to ten days. This is longer than any other Braun electric toothbrush that I am aware of.

Also, the conventional oscillating action of the brush needs more electrical power than a sonic toothbrush. That means the handle is a little bigger than other electric brushes, particularly the sonic brushes, and a little heavier. However, unless you have problems with your wrist, it's not a significant difference.

The handle also has a large LCD display that shows the amount of charge in the battery. This can be useful if you are about to go away for a few days, and don't want to take the charger with you. The display lets you know if you need to put the brush on charge overnight before you leave.

The Oral B 7000 also comes with a small remote unit that communicates with the brush wirelessly. This is the SmartGuide that I mentioned above, and it has a large LCD display. It needs it's own battery, which is not rechargeable, so you have to replace it every so often.

This is essentially a fancy timing device, but it does have some other tricks too. For example, if you press too hard with the brush head while brushing, there's an alarm on the SmartGuide. At the same time, the toothbrush reduces the brush speed and a warning light lights up on the back of the handle!

The Smart Guide also tells you which brushing program you have selected. There are SIX programs available.

  • Daily Clean
  • Deep Clean
  • Whitening
  • Massage
  • Sensitive
  • Tongue Cleaning

My suggestion is to just use the Daily Clean option, unless you have sensitive teeth, in which case use the Sensitive setting. Remember, with a brush like this you don't have to scrub at your teeth - just go slowly and gently, and let the brush do the work!

As the timer runs through it's 2 minute cycle, it beeps every 30 seconds. This is supposed to prompt you to move the brush to another quadrant of your mouth. If you brush for the full 2 minutes, you get a smiley face on the SmartGuide LCD screen!

When you're not brushing, the SmartGuide works as a small bathroom clock, as it displays the current time when not in use!

If you have read any of my other toothbrush reviews, you will know that I dislike these timers. For the vast majority of people, we believe that a total brushing time of only 2 minutes is too short. My personal recommendation would be to double the time, at least! I think most people should spend more like 6 to 8 minutes brushing their teeth. But you only have to do this once a day.

A big plus point about any Oral B / Braun electric toothbrush is that any Oral B brush head will fit ALL Oral B electric toothbrushes. (With the exception of the sonic models such as the Pulsonic).

However, for the Oral B Pro 7000 you can get brush heads with MicroPulse bristles, which Oral B claim can clean deeper between the teeth for a "floss-like" clean. To be honest, I don't think you can replace flossing altogether, but there's no doubt that the MicroPulse bristles do clean very well, and I recommend these brush heads.

By conventional electric toothbrush standards, the Oral B Pro 7000 is actually reasonably quiet. However, because this is an oscillating-rotating electric toothbrush rather than a sonic tooth brush, it definitely has more vibration and is louder than a sonic brush.

This is not really a big issue in my opinion, but if you are used to a sonic tooth brush and you move to the Pro 7000, you will notice a difference in vibration level and sound level!

Manufacturer Oral B says: "Building on the 70 published scientific studies that confirm the efficiency of Oral-B oscillating-rotating technology, the Oral B Pro 7000 represents the highest level of cleaning performance from a conventional Braun electric toothbrush". If you prefer a conventional electric toothbrush over a sonic brush, the Oral B Pro 7000 is at the top of the tree - I think it is the best Oral B / Braun electric toothbrush!

BUT, if you're looking for a SONIC toothbrush, my personal recommendation would be the Cybersonic 3 sonic toothbrush. Read my review of the Cybersonic toothbrush HERE.
